WD Introduces Special SSDs for the VOD, Data Center, AI and ML Service Industries

WD (Western Digital) has just introduced one of their latest SSDs, which is intended for intensive reading usage. SSDs named Ultrastar DC SN340 Very Read Intensive (VRI) are SSDs with low read latency. This is essential for the use of services that require speed reading skills, such as Video-on-Demand (VOD) services, distributed databases and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML).

This American storage company believes that VRI type SSDs can improve power efficiency and costs if used in the VOD service industry and other industries that require intensive reading capabilities in storage, because they have specific capabilities needed by the industry. Storage that is commonly used by video streaming providers currently has a capacity of 1TB with IOPS and bandwidth ratios that are able to meet the need for parallel user / streams (RIOPS), while Ultrastar DC SN340 offers capacities up to 7.68 TB with the same capabilities.

This VRI SSD will come with two capacity options, 3.84 and 7.68 TB. WD also explained that the Ultrastar DC SN340 has been optimized for the use of "one-time writing" with "repeat readings". SSD which uses 96-layer BiCS4 3D TLC NAND technology with WD's own controller is capable of providing write performance up to 3.3GB / s and reads up to 1.5GB / s. In addition, this drive also supports up to 420K random read IOPS with a maximum energy consumption of 6.5 W.

WD itself has just announced their latest drive, and has no plans to mass produce it. However, given the very high storage requirements for the VOD industry and the like, they may start production as soon as possible. We wait for further information.
